This piece was produced as a wedding gift. The bride and groom were married in Las Vegas in April 2015.
Personally, I have never been drawn to Las Vegas, I see it as a plastic town and a huge advertising strip. With this in mind I took to collecting printed material of large American brands for the base of the painting. The brands chosen were predominantly red so I could loosely base the design on an American flag, alongside producing a torn billboard feel. The State of Nevada - where Las Vegas is found - was subtly worked into the composition. The date of marriage was then stencilled for the final layer.
The title 'Heaven or Las Vegas' is from a song written and performed by The Cocteau Twins. I used the angelic lyrics for the calligraphy - providing a juxtaposition of beauty and ugliness of what is Las Vegas.
